Spiriva is used to treat symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These symptoms include bronchitis and emphysema. Spiriva makes breathing easier by enlarging the airways. Do not use Spiriva to treat an asthma attack that has already begun.
Spiriva may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Dosages of Spiriva varies by patient. Use Spiriva exactly as prescribed by your doctor and/or the directions on your prescription label.
Do not take the capsule by mouth. You should only use the Spiriva capsule in the HandiHaler device. Use only one capsule at a time in the Spiriva HandiHaler device.
The usual dose of this medicine is 2 inhalations of the HandiHaler through the mouth once daily.
If you suspect you may have overdosed on Spiriva, or are having an allergic reaction the medication, seek medical attention immediately.
Spiriva can cause side effects such as:
-Rapid heart rate
-Wheezing, trouble breathing, chest tightness or pain
-Eye redness or pain
-White patches or sores in the mouth, tongue, and lips
-Burning when urinating
-Reduced frequency of passing urine

There are drugs that interact with Spiriva. You should tell your doctor about all of the medications you use, including prescription drugs, vitamins, supplements and herbal products, and over the counter medications. You should always tell your doctor before you start taking new medication.
